Why VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)?
The Lincoln Tax Credit Campaign, also known as VITA because it is part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, serves the Lincoln community by providing free tax preparation services to local low to moderate income community members. The program helps eliminates the stress of tax season by starting this service as early as mid-January, and works to ensure families get the most out of their tax return. The value of VITA is not only in the service provided, but in its ability to produce positive outcomes for everyone involved. This includes the many community members, volunteers, and students, who are involved in VITA. Besides help preparing tax returns, VITA means cultivating positive relationships in Lincoln, contributing millions of dollar back to the local economy, and working collectively to change poverty in Lincoln.
Generally, when we decide to volunteer for something, it comes from a general desire to make a difference in the community. You can have that same impact when volunteering for VITA. When volunteering for the Lincoln Tax Credit Campaign, the difference you make can be measured in many ways, including the hours you work, the amount of money you bring in to the community and the number of hard-working Lincoln families that you help. Volunteers can also take comfort knowing that the work they do can make a substantial impact on children’s lives. Every dollar saved in the Lincoln Tax Credit Campaign, through tax refunds and credits like the Earned Income Credit, is a dollar that makes a difference for the thousands of Lincoln children that live in poverty every day. Volunteers also gain experience by preparing many different kinds of tax returns, including their own, at no cost to themselves.
